Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment is a procedure that allows us to save a natural tooth that has become infected, inflamed, or damaged. While the idea of a root canal can sound daunting, modern techniques and effective local anaesthetic make the procedure comfortable and predictable for most patients.

What happens during root canal treatment?
Before beginning treatment, your dentist will assess the tooth and take any necessary x-rays to understand the condition of the tooth and the shape of the roots.
The procedure is performed using local anaesthetic to ensure the area is completely numb and you remain comfortable throughout. Your dentist will carefully access the inside of the tooth, remove the infected or inflamed tissue, clean and disinfect the root canals, and seal the tooth to help prevent bacteria from returning.
Once the root canal has been completed, the tooth will require a permanent restoration to protect it and restore its strength and function. Depending on the condition of the tooth, this may involve a filling or a crown.
When a Referral to an Endodontist May Be Recommended
Many root canal treatments can be completed at Grey Street Dental. However, in some situations, your dentist may recommend referral to an endodontist — a dental specialist with advanced training in diagnosing and treating problems affecting the inside of teeth.
A referral may be recommended when a tooth has complex root anatomy, previous root canal treatment has failed, the infection is particularly challenging, or specialist equipment and expertise are required to achieve the best possible outcome.
If a referral is recommended, your dentist will explain the reasons, answer any questions you may have, and coordinate your care with the specialist. We work closely with trusted endodontists to ensure you receive the highest standard of treatment and the best opportunity to preserve your natural tooth.
