Although our priority is always to preserve your natural teeth wherever possible, there are times when removing a tooth is the best option for your long-term oral health. Teeth may require extraction due to extensive decay, infection, advanced gum disease, fractures, overcrowding, or because they cannot be successfully restored.

Before Your Extraction

Before recommending an extraction, your dentist will carry out a thorough examination and take any necessary x-rays to assess the tooth and surrounding bone. We will discuss all suitable treatment options with you, explain why an extraction is recommended, and develop a treatment plan that meets your individual needs.

When a Referral May Be Recommended

Many tooth extractions can be safely carried out here at Grey Street Dental. However, in some situations, your dentist may recommend referral to an oral surgeon or specialist.

This may be necessary if the tooth is particularly complex to remove, is impacted, is positioned close to important nerves or other anatomical structures, or if a surgical extraction is likely to provide the safest and most predictable outcome. Certain medical conditions may also require treatment under specialist care.

If a referral is recommended, we will explain the reasons, answer any questions you may have, and ensure all relevant x-rays and information are forwarded to the specialist. We work closely with trusted oral surgeons and will continue to support you throughout your treatment.

During the Procedure

Your comfort is our priority. Before the extraction begins, the area around the tooth will be thoroughly numbed using a local anaesthetic. We also apply a topical numbing gel beforehand to make the injection itself more comfortable.

Once the area is numb, your dentist will gently loosen and remove the tooth. You may feel some pressure during the procedure, but you should not feel pain. If at any stage you feel uncomfortable, simply let us know and we will ensure you are comfortable before continuing.

After Your Extraction

Before you leave, your dentist will ensure the extraction site is stable and provide you with clear verbal and written aftercare instructions to help your mouth heal as quickly and comfortably as possible. We will also discuss any recommended pain relief, answer any questions you may have, and explain what to expect during the healing process.
