Dental Hygiene

Regular hygiene appointments are an essential part of maintaining a healthy smile. While your dentist checks for tooth decay, worn teeth, and other oral health concerns during your examination, your dental hygienist focuses on the health of your gums and the supporting structures around your teeth.

Attending regular hygiene appointments alongside your routine dental examinations is one of the best ways to prevent dental disease and maintain long-term oral health. Together, these appointments allow us to detect problems early, prevent gum disease, and keep your teeth looking and feeling their best. The frequency of your hygiene appointments will depend on your individual needs, but many patients benefit from professional cleaning every six months.

What happens during a hygiene appointment?
Your dental hygienist will perform a comprehensive assessment of your gum health before beginning treatment. This includes:

  • Assessing your periodontal (gum) health.
  • Recording periodontal measurements around each tooth to monitor the health of your gums and supporting bone.
  • Checking for signs of gingivitis or periodontal disease.
  • Identifying areas of plaque, tartar (calculus), gum recession, bleeding, and other changes in your oral health.

These periodontal measurements form an important part of your dental record and allow us to monitor your gum health over time, identifying any changes early so that treatment can begin before more advanced disease develops.

Cleaning
Following your assessment, your hygienist will professionally remove plaque, tartar (calculus), and surface staining using a combination of modern technology and specialised instruments.

At Grey Street Dental, we use a combination of:

Airflow® Treatment
Our Airflow® system uses a gentle stream of warm water, air, and fine powder to remove plaque, biofilm, and surface stains from your teeth. It is an excellent way to remove staining caused by coffee, tea, red wine, and smoking, while also cleaning around braces, implants, and other dental restorations. Airflow® provides a comfortable, minimally invasive cleaning experience and leaves your teeth feeling exceptionally clean and smooth.

Ultrasonic Scaling
Ultrasonic scalers use high-frequency vibrations together with a gentle flow of water to loosen and remove hardened tartar (calculus) from above and below the gum line. This allows for efficient and thorough cleaning while helping to minimise discomfort.

Hand Scaling
Your hygienist will also use specialised hand instruments to carefully remove any remaining deposits and fine-tune the cleaning process. Combining ultrasonic and hand scaling allows every tooth surface to be cleaned thoroughly and precisely.

Your Comfort is Our Priority
Many people feel anxious about hygiene appointments or worry that a professional clean will be uncomfortable. At Grey Street Dental, we take pride in making every hygiene appointment as gentle and comfortable as possible.

Our hygienists use modern equipment and techniques designed to minimise discomfort while providing a thorough clean. We work at your pace and encourage you to let us know if you experience any sensitivity during your appointment.

For patients with particularly sensitive teeth or gums, or those requiring more extensive periodontal treatment, we can provide local anaesthetic to comfortably numb the area being treated. Our goal is to ensure you receive the care you need in a relaxed and positive environment.

Oral Health Education
A healthy smile starts at home. At the end of your appointment, your hygienist will provide advice to help you maintain your oral health between visits.

This may include:

  • Demonstrating effective brushing techniques.
  • Recommending the most suitable toothbrush, toothpaste, and oral hygiene products.
  • Teaching you how to clean effectively between your teeth using floss or interdental brushes.
  • Discussing dietary habits that may affect your oral health.
  • Providing advice to help prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Developing a personalised home care routine based on your individual needs.

Why are regular hygiene appointments important?
Even with excellent brushing and flossing, plaque can harden into tartar (calculus), which cannot be removed at home. Left untreated, this build-up can cause inflammation of the gums, bleeding, bad breath, periodontal disease, and eventually tooth loss.

Regular hygiene appointments, together with routine dental examinations, help to:

  • Prevent gum disease and tooth loss.
  • Remove plaque, tartar, and surface stains.
  • Maintain fresh breath.
  • Improve the appearance of your smile.
  • Protect crowns, bridges, implants, and other dental restorations.
  • Support your overall health by reducing chronic gum inflammation.

By combining regular dental examinations with professional hygiene care, you are giving yourself the best opportunity to maintain a healthy mouth and a confident smile for life.
